Some 18 months ago, the State Highway Administration (SHA) began installing lights at the I-83/Belfast Road interchange. Responding to a complaint from a concerned resident, SHA determined that erecting more than 40 light poles would reduce the number of accidents at the interchange.

Community members mobilized to ask questions, amass and analyze data, and propose other options. Concerns ranged from wasting taxpayer money on a solution to a problem that didn’t exist, to the effects of light pollution on wildlife and residents.

SHA responded with a series of meetings during which it heard concerns and proposed solutions. Last night the SHA announced that no lights will be erected. Instead, signs and pavement markings will be used to caution motorists.

We applaud the SHA for developing a plan to improve safety while being responsive to the concerns of the community.
