They may involve a special study, such as the Rural Road Design Standards study, or they may involve coordinating support or opposition to a specific policy, development, zoning change, or special exception request.

Baltimore County has over 55,000 acres under conservation easement and is a leader nationally in land preservation efforts. A conservation easement is a legal document that is recorded and attached to the property deed that places certain restrictions and conditions on the land.

Farms are a major part of the landscape and way of life in rural Baltimore County. Although the number of farms has been steadily declining, there are still about 750 farms in the county, totaling over 78,000 acres, with an average size of 104 acres. Many properties have horses; over 10,000 horses are kept in Baltimore County with an equine inventory valued at over $121 million. Steeplechase racing and fox hunting are major activities in the VPC territory.
